Retired Kingston firefighter cycles to raise funds for kids with cancer – Kingston

A retired Kingston firefighter uses his love of cycling to raise money for children with cancer.

John Osborn ranks ninth in the county so far this year for those taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge, an initiative that raises money for children with cancer.

With the distance he has cycled so far, he has raised nearly $10,000.

“I’ve lost 28 pounds, so there’s nothing wrong with that,” Osborn joked.

To collect this money, he cycled every day for the entire month of August. He says the matter is close to his heart.

“My daughter, although she wasn’t a little kid at the time, got leukemia and she battled it for two and a half years, with treatments and things like that. And she’s in remission now,” he said.

On average, the 72-year-old cycles about 30-40 kilometers per day.

This isn’t Osborn’s first time either, he’s been doing this challenge for five years now, racking up over 3,500 miles and nearly $30,000 for charity.

“Last year I drove over 1,000 kilometers and that is my goal this year. I’m at about 750 now, but I still have two weeks to go,” Osborn said Wednesday.

It’s been a particularly hot and humid month for cycling, but Osborn said he has a lot of motivation to keep him going.

“If I get hot or if I get tired, I can stop or go inside. They can’t just give up with their struggle, they have it every day,” he said.

Osborn has currently raised $9,500 for this year and hopes to cycle another 300 miles by the end of the month.
