Amecquita brought her 13-year-old daughter Osiris to the clinic to get vaccinated, but she had no intention of getting one herself.

‘I wanted to get the shot. She didn’t want to get the shot, ”said Osiris Amecquita.

But after talking to a doctor, Lessly Amecauita changed her mind and was also vaccinated on Saturday.

Dr. Robyn Riseberg of Boston Community Pediatrics says small practices can often overcome the false information their patients receive and convince them to get the injection, but notes that it sometimes requires lengthy talks about vaccine safety and side effects.

“It won’t be soon,” said Riseberg. ‘It will not be the case that we vaccinate hundreds of people a day. That is not my goal. Again, it’s only one person at a time and I know we’ll get there. ‘

Dr. Caitlin Wu-Pierce, who also works at Boston Community Pediatrics, worked on the phones and called families one at a time. She says she was surprised to learn that about half of the families she called on Saturday had already been vaccinated.

“It’s surprising, but actually reassuring,” said Wu-Pierce. “I’m excited for people to feel comfortable and go out and get it.”

Saturday’s clinic was due to end at noon, but Boston Community Pediatrics had six vaccines left. Employees stayed late to contact more families about receiving the vaccine. They did use a few extra doses, but a few had to be thrown away because the vaccines cannot be stored once they were thawed.
