Pedal the Cause: Local toddler an inspiration for many looking to make it a world without cancer | St. Louis News Headlines

NS. LOUIS ( — There is nothing more devastating as a parent than when your child is sick. There is an organization stepping in to turn those worries into hope.

Pedal the Cause helps Eleanor, a local toddler – and lots of kids like her.

‘She’s feisty, sassy. Of all three of my children, she is by far the wild one,” says Molly Krebel, Eleanor’s mother. “Keeps us sharp.”

But Eleanor has had a hard time. She was born on May 4, 2019 with Down syndrome and was then diagnosed with TMD.

“TMD is a transient disorder, and I think that just makes a lot of immature cells. And hers went away and in March it started to represent,” Krebel said. “In March 2020 her blood work started to look a little different so we started checking her more often and in August they saw some cells in her blood that they had never seen before so she was diagnosed with Leukemia. .”

Twelve months and six rounds of chemotherapy later, the smile on Eleanor’s face and the happy tears in her father’s eyes show that the Krebels got a great result. That little Eleanor is cancer free.

“When we got the diagnosis, we weren’t super surprised,” said Eleanor’s father, Nathan. She was a little slow. The Children’s team, the doctors were very, very clear about the plan to sort this out and get a good outcome.”

When Eleanor rang the bell at St. Louis Children’s Hospital earlier this spring, excitement for this year’s Pedal the Cause began to mount, especially after last year’s ride was turned into a virtual one.

Nathan and Molly are honored that their feisty little toddler will inspire others to make it a world without cancer.

If you want to help kids like Eleanor or anyone else diagnosed with cancer this year, visit the Pedal the Cause website. The event will be held this year on September 25 and 26 at the Chesterfield Amphitheater. All money raised will fund cancer research at the Siteman Cancer Center and Siteman Kids at St. Louis Children’s Hospital.
