When local families are struggling, John Kasey is there to help. “I’ve always put people first before putting myself, always,” Kasey said. For about nine years, Ride to Ride Out has helped Cancer in Bullitt County raise money for cancer patients. It helps pay medical bills, mortgages and other expenses. Last year they started their bike giveaway. Now, the same illness he has helped families with, Kasey is battling himself. He has stage 4 lymphoma. The cancer has reached his blood and bones. “Like why us? Why him? He’s helped so many people,” said wife Shelia Kasey. When Kasey and his wife heard about the diagnosis earlier this month, there was a flurry of emotions.” Lots of worries, scared. I’m going to miss work and don’t know what we’re going to do,” said Shelia Kasey. Meanwhile, John told Kasey he was on the other side of the fight against cancer “Just the mental part of it, being on this side of the table to help them and now the table is kicked out, and here we are on the same side of the table as them,” said John Kasey. They expect to hand out more than 300 bicycles for children. Even in John Kasey’s time of need, he chooses to help others. “Caring for others is very important to me,” said John Kasey. John Kasey says he don’t give up. He will overcome cancer while continuing to give hope to others. The Kasey family hopes the community will give bicycles to other families. You can also help their family by donating to help with medical costs and bills.
