Leigh Park barber raises thousands for children’s cancer charity with head shave inspired by Sophie Fairall
Merina Razzell, manager of Barbers&Co in Swaythling Road, had her long dark locks cut on Saturday to support the charity Alice’s Arc, which funds childhood cancer research.
She was inspired to collect donations for a childhood cancer charity by following the story of 10-year-old Sophie Fairall from Stubbington, who lost her battle with cancer last month.

Merina before and after shaving
Daughter Sophia Razzell, owner of Barbers&Co, said: ‘She followed Sophie’s Journey on Facebook and was very moved by the story.
‘There was so much room and people came to the hairdressers’ to discuss it.
“My mom thought it would be nice to support something that had touched so many people on the ground.”
Merina waved goodbye to 10 inches of hair, which had been shaved off by several members of her family — her three grandchildren, two daughters (Sophia and sister Lauren), and her previous mother-in-law who used to be a hairdresser.

Merina, who now has two woolen hats to keep her head warm this winter, said, “They cut pigtails and all tried to shave my head. They loved it, they were captivated.’
The hair will be donated to the Little Princess Trust to make a wig for a young person who has lost his own hair to cancer.
Merina added: “I feel fantastic because it raises a lot of money for a good cause.
“I want to thank all customers and customers for their generous donations.”
Merina’s family tries to shave her hair
The head shave has raised £2,404 in donations, and more money is yet to be raised from sponsors.
Sophia said: “We want to thank everyone for their support in this fundraiser and are so proud of Merina for having so bravely shaved her hair for a good cause.
“We have been open since 2020 and are pleased that with Sophie’s Journey we are supporting a charity that has affected many locally.
“We will be raising money for Alice’s Arc until the end of November.”
Barbers&Co is open on Halloween night for trick or treaters and also offers soup for adults.
