CAP’s Fund golf tourney raises more than $38,000 for families of children with cancer – Daily Freeman

The CAP’S Fund held its fifth annual golf tournament on Friday, September 17, and has raised more than $38,000 for families caring for a child with cancer.

This year the tournament has moved to the 27-hole Apple Greens Golf Course in Highland, NY, to support an expanded format of 42 teams. Childhood Cancer Awareness Month was recognized in September and childhood cancer organizations around the world are organizing fundraisers.

CAP’S stands for Cancer help for parents. According to Jim Sass, the organization’s president, the nonprofit has donated $135,000 to 53 families over the past five years. Sass added: “The money from this year’s golf tournament will be used
to support another 12 families,” he said in a press release.

The non-profit is run solely by volunteers who devote their personal time to the cause. All the money raised goes directly to families fighting childhood cancer.

UBS Financial Services is the main sponsor of the golf outing. “We have 105 additional sponsors and 58 donation providers,” Coleen Sass, one of the lead organizers, said in the press release. “We have a great community of volunteers
and committee members focused on making this day a success”.

Ed Molinaro, a member of Ulster Hose Co. no. 5 and one of the volunteers and sponsors, said in the release: “The community comes together to make a difference. Bill Gavis, another sponsor, said: “We look forward to playing every year” as he loaded his clubs onto a cart with teammate Andrew Connors. Connors works at Twelve Skills Golf Club, who donated a club membership as an auction item.

Financial won the 50/50 lottery and immediately donated the money back to the organization while he received a huge ovation under the food tent.

The inspiration for the CAP’S Fund began in 2016 when Jim and Coleen Sass’ 12-year-old niece, Kira Sass, was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. Her valiant struggle lasted only 18 months, but her determination
and optimism motivated Jim and Coleen Sass to found the nonprofit. They witnessed the emotional and financial burden on his brother’s family and wanted to help more families. The annual event is called the Kira Sass
Commemorative golf tournament.

The golf event will take place again next year at Apple Greens overlooking the Shawangunk Mountains. It will be followed by dinner and the team awards ceremony. The event concludes with many raffle prizes offered by more than 50 local donors, including golf courses, restaurants and shops.
